Courthouse Technologies is always trying to provide jury offices with useful information about how to make their jury operation better. One area that I discuss a lot when speaking to jury staff, is how they pay jurors or how they would LIKE to pay their jurors. Most jury staff want to pay jurors as quickly as possible without driving up the cost or inconvenience to the court. More importantly, they want to do this while still maintaining the court’s business policies and audit trails. Most see this as a conundrum.
It’s tough trying to manage juries these days. Getting people to show up for jury service is the single-hardest task to accomplish because, although jury service is mandatory, many people cannot be bothered to engage in their civic duty to help administer justice. In many peoples’ eyes, it is not worth their time or effort to be a part of something that is cumbersome and time-consuming with little-to-no return. Jury pay is typically low compared to minimum wage and if your employer does not reimburse you, it becomes a financial issue.
